How Pilates Improves Functional Movement and Prevents Injury
In the pursuit of a healthier, more active lifestyle, incorporating practices that enhance functional movement and prevent injury is essential. At West Hollywood Pilates, we specialize in classical Pilates and its integration with mindful practices to support overall well-being. Here’s how Pilates can play a crucial role in enhancing functional movement and reducing the risk of injury.
Understanding Functional Movement
Functional movement refers to exercises and activities that mimic the movements of daily life, promoting efficiency and reducing the risk of injury. It involves engaging multiple muscle groups and joints to perform actions that are essential for everyday activities such as lifting, bending, and reaching.
How Pilates Supports Functional Movement
- Core Strength and Stability: Pilates emphasizes the development of core strength, which is vital for maintaining stability and balance. A strong core supports the spine and pelvis, enhancing overall functional movement and reducing the risk of injury.
- Improved Flexibility and Mobility: Pilates exercises focus on lengthening and stretching muscles, which improves flexibility and joint mobility. Enhanced flexibility and mobility contribute to more fluid and efficient movement patterns, making daily activities easier and reducing the likelihood of strains or sprains.
- Postural Alignment: Proper alignment is a key component of Pilates. By promoting correct posture and alignment, Pilates helps prevent imbalances and compensations that can lead to injury. Correct alignment also supports optimal movement patterns, ensuring that you move efficiently and safely.
- Muscle Balance and Coordination: Pilates works on balancing muscle strength and coordination, addressing both underactive and overactive muscle groups. This balanced approach helps to prevent injuries caused by muscle imbalances and enhances overall functional movement.
- Mind-Body Connection: Pilates encourages a deep connection between the mind and body through controlled movements and focused breathing. This heightened awareness of your body’s movements and alignment can help you recognize and address any areas of tension or weakness before they lead to injury.
Integrating Pilates into Your Routine
To maximize the benefits of Pilates for functional movement and injury prevention, consider incorporating the following tips into your routine:
- Consistency: Regular Pilates sessions ensure continuous improvement in core strength, flexibility, and alignment. Aim to incorporate Pilates into your weekly routine to see lasting benefits.
- Variety: Combine Pilates with other forms of exercise to create a well-rounded fitness routine. Activities such as strength training, cardio, and functional movement exercises complement the benefits of Pilates and support overall physical health.
- Personalization: Work with a certified Pilates instructor to tailor exercises to your individual needs and goals. Personalized sessions address specific areas of concern and help you achieve optimal results.
Where the powerhouse comes in
Joseph Pilates called the deep band of muscle around the trunk the powerhouse: the abdominals, the back, the hips and the pelvic floor working as one. Most of what we call functional movement starts there. Think of lifting a suitcase into an overhead bin, or getting up off the floor without reaching for the couch. When the powerhouse organizes first, the arms and legs have something steady to work from, and the lower back stops doing jobs that belong to the hips.
You can practice this outside the studio too. Notice whether you hold your breath when you pick up the groceries, or whether you can breathe out and let your center do the lifting. Small habits like that are where the work carries into your day.
How we teach it at West Hollywood Pilates
A session here is private. You book the hour and the whole studio is yours, so nothing competes for your teacher's attention. We work on the full Balanced Body Contrology apparatus, the Cadillac, reformer, Wunda Chair and ladder barrel among them, which means an exercise can be set up with springs that assist you or springs that ask for more, depending on what your body needs that day.
Yonatan trained under Carrie Samper, who was certified by Romana Kryzanowska, one of Joseph Pilates' own students. The classical repertoire he teaches asks the whole body to work together, which is exactly what everyday movement asks of it. Your first visit is a 55-minute intro session for $65.

We wrote a book.
The Classical Pilates Companion is 55 pages on the method as it was actually built. It comes with the letter we send on Tuesdays. Read The Classical Pilates Companion
